E-Paper Advances toward the Marketplace at Display Week 2010

Early uses of e-paper displays were in low-power, relatively low-resolution applications such as watches and calculators. Within the past two years, however, e-Readers such as the Amazon Kindle and Sony Reader have demonstrated that e-paper is earning its place as a viable technology for mobile applications where low power consumption, light weight, and readability are major drivers. This year's announcement of the Barnes and Noble Nook reader is a further example of the rapid spread of this exciting technology. E-paper appears ready to take its place alongside LCD as a cost-effective choice for a broad range of consumer electronics applications.

Last year's Display Week provided strong evidence that more than ever before, the value of paper-like displays is being recognized. During Display Week 2009, Plastic Logic Vice President Martin Jackson addressed the challenges and opportunities created by printable electronics for e-paper displays in his keynote address. E Ink announced its merger with Prime View of Taiwan, a significant step toward higher volume manufacturing. And Samsung and LG Electronics, along with many other display companies, demonstrated exciting future product concepts incorporating e-paper technology.

Beyond e-readers, some e-paper applications are still in the demonstration category, but the race is definitely on to roll out products with exciting new capabilities and get them to market.
